Prescribed Burning
Belwin has been conducting prescribed burns on its property for several decades. These burns are an essential tool for us as we restore and preserve our property. We are planning to conduct several burns in April and May of 2008.
The exact date and time for these burns cannot be determined in advance. They will be conducted only when both the conditions on the ground and the weather are appropriate. No spring burns will be conducted after the end of May. All of Belwin’s prescribed burns are permitted by the DNR and the fire department; and are conducted by staff certified in wildland firefighting.
Fire is one of the most effective and efficient management tools that we have and it is an essential part of a prairie’s ecology. The burns that Belwin has been conducting over the years have been a key part of our success in restoring our land and controlling invasive species.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. This page will be updated on the days prescribed burns will be conducted.
Updates
- May 1, 2008 - We conducted several large burns on Tuesday and Wednesday, the results of which should be obvious as you drive along Stagecoach Trail. These were our largest burns of the year and they were a complete success. You can read more about these burns in the Wednesday edition of the Stillwater Gazette. On Wednesday we did two smaller pieces that we didn't complete the previous day. At this point we may or may not do any more burns this year. We had hoped to burn a few more small areas, but the growing season is getting on, and our window is closing.
- April 28, 2008 - So long as the weather holds, we are planning to conduct several prescribed burns tomorrow the 29th. These burns will likely be the large fields located along Stagecoach Drive.
- April 24, 2008 - We had a great day of burning yesterday. The weather was perfect and we completed burns on eight sites, covering 18 acres. All of the areas completed were smaller units at the southern end of our property. We are anxious to continue with the rest of our planned burns, but we will have to wait for the current weather system to move through. We expect that we will be able to resume next week.
- April 23, 2008 - The weather looks good so we will be doing the first burns of the season today. As described below, we are planning to work on many of the smaller areas inside Belwin property.
- April 22, 2008 - We are planning to conduct the first prescribed burns tomorrow, April 23rd. The intent is to do several small areas internal to Belwin's property.
- April 21, 2008 - Depending on weather, we may begin conducting burns this week.
