Bison Update

We have been absolutely blown away by the interest shown in the bison since they arrived at Belwin this past June. We had always conceived of them as an educational tool and had always planned for a visitor’s area, but we were simply not prepared for the interest shown in the bison this year.

To address this, Belwin has started construction on a deck and observation tower at our parking area off of Division Street. This will afford visitors a view of the bison no matter where they are located on the prairie. We are also planning to install interpretive signage to help educate about the bison and the prairie. We have raised some funds to offset the cost of the tower, but we do need more. Please consider making a donation to help Belwin offset this expense.

bison 1 By the time you read this, the bison will have been taken back their wintering grounds in Wisconsin. We had not planned to overwinter the animals at Belwin this year however it is possible that we will in the future. We will spend the winter evaluating the effect that the bison have had on the prairie, although all indications are that it was very positive. We will then use this knowledge to help us determine how many to bring back next spring.
