Bison Update

The bison returned to the Belwin Conservancy for 2010 on Saturday, June 19th. For the previous two summers, the bison have added an unmistakable richness to our prairies. They have also brought thousands of people to the Belwin Conservancy, many for the first time. We are eager to build on that success and this year we’ll be hosting our largest herd yet. And for the first time, we will also be hosting bison on the smaller prairie southwest of the intersection of Hudson Road and Stagecoach Trail.

Last year we debuted the bison observation platform. This summer, in addition to hosting more animals, we are adding educational signage to help visitors understand more about bison, the prairie and the Belwin Conservancy. At the bison release on the 19th, we also debuted our brand new Bison Buggy. For the last two years, some of our most popular member activities have been ‘bison safaris,’ up close tours of the bison operated out of our all-terrain vehicle. The Bison Buggy was designed and built by Belwin Conservancy staff expressly for these tours and others around the preserve. Look in the Events section of this newsletter for tour dates.

We hope everyone stops at the observation platform to say ‘hello’ to the bison, read our new signs and watch the changing prairie for another summer.
